Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and OpenAI are leading the market for developing programming tools to support artificial intelligence, according to research conducted by JPMorgan.
This study, which gathered responses from 80 individuals specializing in software creation and development operations, revealed important findings about the state of AI-assisted programming support.
JPMorgan observed that “33% software developers participating in our research do not use any AI-enabled programming tools,” highlighting significant untapped market potential.
However, among those using such technologies, Microsoft's GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT dominate, with a combined usage rate of 79%. In particular, “Microsoft's GitHub Copilot has established a significant advantage” with a usage rate of 50%.
Surprisingly, GitLab Duo has yet to make a significant entry into the market. “None of the software developers we interviewed are currently using GitLab Duo,” JPMorgan reports, although they acknowledge that GitLab’s more recent offerings may not have had enough time to gain traction after their latest launch.
Additionally, the study found that “43% of software developers say their employers intend to adopt Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot as their standard AI-powered programming tool within the next 12 to 24 months.”
This rate closely matches GitHub Copilot's current adoption rate at 48%, indicating a strong movement towards uniform adoption.
The results from JPMorgan's research highlight the significant influence and market presence that Microsoft and OpenAI hold in the field of programming tools that support artificial intelligence, making them leading entities in this growing field.
